EU Green Week 2022 in Serbia

Circular economy, zero pollution and biodiversity are in the focus of this year’s EU Green Week, taking place from May 30 to June 5. The EU Green Week is celebrated to raise awareness to the most important issues in environment protection. This year almost 300 events are planned all around Europe.

During the celebration of the European Green Week in Serbia, a series of events and online activities will present the concrete results of the cooperation between Serbia, the European Union, its Member States and several international partners.

The first event will take place in Sremska Mitrovica, on Monday (May 30th), when the activities within the Green Week will officially begin, as well as the project for waste separation in households. On that day, the officials will visit the Regional Waste Centre, which was built with EU funds.

On the same day, a new EU project for household waste separation will be launched. The European Union and Serbian Government are providing 26 vehicles for the transport of recyclable waste and more than 90,000 containers and bins, and a large-scale information campaign. The European Union contributed €6M EUR and Serbian national and participating local authorities contributed €1.8M EUR.

On Sunday, June 5th, World Environment Day will be celebrated in the Donji Grad of Kalemegdan Fortress, when a large number of activities are planned for all generations.

„The world is a symbiotic living organism. Anything happens in one corner of the world affects another part. Global warming is taking its toll already, we see droughts and heat waves across the globe, and so everyone has a role to play to decrease Greenhouse gas emissions. We need to work together for actions to stop global warming and pollution“, says Ambassador of EU to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret.

Every year, the EU Green Week is an opportunity to debate European environmental policy with policy makers, leading environmentalists and stakeholders from Europe and beyond. This year’s edition focuses on the European Green Deal – a sustainable and transformative EU growth strategy – for Europe to use resources efficiently and become climate neutral by 2050.

The activities are implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of European Integration, local governments, the embassies of Sweden and France, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Swedish Development Agency (SIDA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), KFW Bank, the European Investment Bank and many others.

The European Union is the world leader in environmental protection. The EU supports Serbia on its path to a healthier environment. With over 400 million EUR in non-refundable grants invested in environmental protection and climate action in Serbia, the EU is the largest donor in this area in the country.

With EU’s financial support, Serbia is working to develop and implement plans for the strategic protection of environment—a sustainable system of environmental protection that creates healthier surroundings and raises the quality of life.
